Archos 501582 Review by Johnny G

Does everything I need it to do with only a few exceptions.
------------------------------------------------------------
Here's what it does well:

1. E-reader (with software: Beamreader PDF, Nook reader software, Kindle, and Aldiko)

2. Plays pretty much every video file I throw at it (with Rockplayer from the Android market)

3. I can read my digital graphic novels (CBR files, with ACV- Android Comic Viewer)

4. GOOD web browsing

5. Games are more fun on the bigger screen than with my Android phone

6. Speakers are loud and perfect for playing media through

7. Built in slideshow software and kickstand make it a good photo frame while it is charging

8. I easily installed Gmail/Google Market (gapps4archos2.apk) by downloading a quick patch from the net

9. battery is decent, especially while being used offline to play videos

10. HDMI output comes in handy

11. super thin & lightweight compared to all other tablets

12. unit is not bloated out with laggy software. vanilla android

13. having a camera facing in is a nice feature, though i have yet to use it for anything productive

14. Affordable

15. 2.2 updated right out of the box, does a decent job of playing flash

16. WiFi connects quickly

17. Easier to type on and allows me to be more productive than my phone

18. bright and clear LCD display when viewed straight on
-----------------------------------------------
what it could do BETTER (or needs to be changed):

1. only has 256 mb RAM so it gets sluggish and tends to freeze after being used for a while

2. I'm not sure how this will pan out but it has 8gb internal memory. I use an SDcard for media storage, but the settings shows i already have only 270 mb left for application storage. I am thinking that may be an error, but we will see

3. will NOT bluetooth tether with my phone for internet (Samsung Fascinate) (see no. 4)

4. I emailed Archos about some of the issues/questions I have and they have YET to reply to me to even let me know if they are working on a solution. It's been almost a week. their website says 2 days

5. WILL NOT charge via USB, only supplied DC charger which is bulky and a pain in the butt to carry around (unsure of how to charge through the car, and Archos has yet to answer this question- no. 4).

6. No GPS. It is not completely necessary to have this, but Archos has put GPS on some of their other tablets and it would have been nice to see it on this one.

7. bad viewing angles, must view straight on

8.Chincy and frail feel to the body, including a plastic and weak kickstand which puts the screen at a poor angle for viewing and makes unit vulnerable to being knocked over while it is in use

9. very reflective screen and the entire front of the unit is a fingerprint magnet

10. Camera is pixelated, kind of blurry, and laggy

11. For some reason, I can not install Swype (may be an issue with the software, not the phone)

12. unit is aesthetically dull and unappealing

13. wish I had bought the 250 gb version but it wasnt on Amazon when I ordered this one.

All in all, I am satisfied, mainly because it does do so much despite of its failings and it was a good price. It is definitely a better value than the outlandishly priced Galaxy tablet and Ipad.

I recently purchased NookColor, but then when I heard Archos just released this one at a similar price point as NookColor, I thought it doesn't make sense not to switch. At the very least, you can just install the Nook app on this device, and it will do everything that NookColor does, plus much more. (i.e. other eBook readers like Kindle, better browser, games, Android market...etc)... Also, it's much lighter and thinner than NookColor. So from this point of view, I am very happy with the purchase. The capacitive touch screen works very well (although it misses my touch once in a while especially when tablet is busy), and the battery lasts very long (~ 10 hrs dimmed screen w/o wifi, just reading books) My biggest issue is that the wifi connectivity sometimes drops, and so i have to restart the wifi, but it might be my problem as I haven't heard other people complaining about this particular issue. It does have front facing camera, but it's sluggish and resolution is not that great. This doesn't concern me as I never need to use camera.

Like other reviewers mentioned, I wished it had more RAM, easier tethering with AT&T, higher resolution like Galaxy Tab...etc, but then it won't be priced below $300. So overall, I think Archos 70 is currently the most cost effective 7" Android tablet in the market and an excellent color eBook reader. I even sold my Kindle reader as I started using this as an eBook reader, so I recouped half of its price already!

update (12/20/2010) - I still LOVE this device. I just installed the latest firmware update(2.0.71), and this resolved my wifi issue, which was actually known issue for people who use WPA2/AES encryption. The update also resolved the slow SMB connectivity for shared network storage! Now I can reliably stream Terabytes of movies and songs from my Windows shared drive! Amazon also just updated its Kinlde app for Android, and reading books on this device is pleasure! It's much faster and easier to navigate than Kindle 3 device, and I can now read book in dark without having to attach those cumbersome eBook light. By the way, people say reading on LCD gives you loss of sleep and eye strain...etc, but I think it's a myth. Just dim the backlight until your eyes get comfortable while you read, and it actually helps you fall a sleep at night. Also, I am not sure if this was due to this firmware update, but now I got the tethering work from my AT&T windows smart phone (motorola q9h) over bluetooth!! Now I can connect to internet outside my house!! I am very impressed so far with this device and quick software/firmware update from Archos.

Archos 501582 Review by BTX

I own the Archos 70 Internet Tablet with Android 2.2 Froyo installed.

I am going to start by listing the three things I hate about this tablet.

1. It only has 256 megabytes of RAM. It really should have 512 megabytes of RAM. (And I would have paid a little more to get twice the RAM.)

2. It does not come with the Android Marketplace App or Google Apps pre-installed. (So, with each update, you have to rely on others to create the Google Apps .apk that you can hunt down and manually install. I did it, of course, but it is a little pain in the butt. And, not all the apps show up in the Marketplace.)

3. It is a fingerprint magnet like you wouldn't believe. The bezel around the screen absorbs oil from your skin like crazy. Keep a wiping cloth handy at all times.

OK, now to the good. I paid just over $250 for this tablet direct from Archos, and at that price, I am satisfied where I give the device 4 out of 5 stars. I like the size and weight (as I found the iPad to be too heavy when holding it for a long time). Battery life is good. The screen is excellent for Internet, email, and video.

Android 2.2 Froyo runs well on my tablet, and I am happy to have Adobe Flash (although not every single Flash Website works...and if you encounter a chat box that runs on Flash, like Chatango, the keyboard does not respond, you cannot chat).

Bottom line: If you want a very good and reasonably-priced 7" WiFi-only tablet right now, the Archos 70 is the one to get. (If you don't need one right now, it is expected there will be many more tablets offered in 2011...and they will have more RAM and a more powerful processor. And yes, I know, they will be more expensive.)
